The 7th Special Forces is one of the Army's elite units that specializes in unconventional warfare. Their willingness to accept the danger, isolation and hardships inherent to their mission helps define their unit and is clearly depicted in their motto: De Oppresso Liber - To Free the Oppressed.
On Friday, the 7th Special Forces opened its doors to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an all-day open house. State Senator Don Gaetz welcomed the soldiers and their families to the Emerald Coast. Over 1,000 people attended the ribbon-cutting, and between 2,500 and 3,000 people attended the open house.
Since 1960, the 7th Special Forces Group had been based at Fort Bragg before it moved its operations to Eglin Air Force Base, which is about 20 miles from Hurlburt Field. The commander of the 7th Special Forces, Col. Antonio Fletcher, expressed how proud he was of this group because they were the only BRAC unit to make the move while simultaneously undergoing perilous missions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Latin America. He also stated that on any given day, 300-500 brave soldiers from the 7th Special Forces were deployed around the globe during the BRAC initiatives.
